Publix donates school supplies to Teacher Warehouse

On Wednesday, September 23, representatives from the Madison Street location of the Publix Super Market in Clarksville delivered $7,000 worth of donated school supplies to the Clarksville-Montgomery County Education Foundation’s Teacher Warehouse located at the CMCSS Central Services South building on 1312 Hwy 48/13.

The items were collected during school supply drive that Publix conducted for three weeks throughout the month of August at both its Madison Street and Tiny Town Road locations.

Crayons, books, notebook paper, ledgers, journals, pencils and pens were among the items that were generously purchased by the Clarksville community. In total, the two stores collected supplies adding up to a combined value of $12,000.

Norman Rubio, the Store Manager of the Madison Street Pubix location commented that the supply drive inspired “a lot of customer enthusiasm.”

He went on to say that over the three and a half years that his location has been in operation, they have had “a good relationship” with the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, and giving back to local schools was “a very easy decision to make.”

The Teacher Warehouse allows CMCSS teachers the opportunity to have access to new and gently used donated supplies for the benefit of student achievement. In the past five years, the store, operated solely by volunteers, has saved local teachers nearly $222,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. New Clarksville-Montgomery County Teachers Will Save Out-of-Pocket Dollars from Visiting the Teacher Warehouse

During the 2014-2015 school year the CMC Teacher Warehouse saved teacher shoppers $47,000 collectively,  in out-of-pocket expenses on school and office supplies they would have spent for their classrooms. This figure equates to about $40 for each visit made to the store by a teacher. One hundred and sixty plus new CMCSS teachers visited the Warehouse on July 30-31st to secure needed items not only as a new teacher, but also for students that may potentially show up at school without supplies. Many of the shoppers during the two-day event could not believe all of the items they had access to and were very appreciative of the support from the community!

Volunteer Recognition Dinner

Because of our volunteers, today we are able to sustain even more programs than we started 29 years ago like; The Teacher Warehouse, 100% Graduation, Reality Check, Vision 2 Reality, Get Motivated, Stuff the Bus, Academic Awards, Kinder-Kits, Pass and Go, STEM Initiatives and much more. The Teacher Warehouse was our program logging the most volunteer hours with more than 1400 hours served. Our overall volunteer totals for the year has been nearly 1,800 hours given to support our work by 213 volunteers and because of their work we can use more of our donated funds to go directly into classrooms. These hours equated to more than $39,852 in savings for our operating cost.

Subaru Share the Love Event

The Wyatt Johnson “Subaru Share the Love” Event proved to be a great success for local non-profit, Clarksville-Montgomery County Education Foundation. The Foundation was selected in early January as the Hometown Charity for the local and national dealership campaign giving event.

During the one-month period ending in February 2015 nearly 35 Subaru’s were sold at the Wyatt Johnson dealership and as a result a donation was made to the Education Foundation board from incentive proceeds in the amount of $9,639.00!

The Foundation board accepted the check during their quarterly meeting on April 10th from General Manager Bill Powers, who is also a Foundation Board Member. The proceeds will be used to support the CMC Teacher Warehouse, a free-supply store for CMCSS teachers and their Count Me In Endowment Campaign.

Wyatt Johnson is a strong partner with CMCSS and the lead sponsor of the AP Pass and Go event which takes place in the summer with a car giveaway incentive for one student winner excelling in their Advanced placement courses. Dominos, Premier Medical and Beach Oil are all co-sponsors of the Pass and Go event as well. Earlier this year, Wyatt Johnson presented a $5,000 check to the school system to support AP training for teachers to help students succeed in those courses. Wyatt Johnson is truly a supporter of Public Education in Clarksville-Montgomery County!

“It makes sense to prepare students for the global economy to be competitive with students worldwide!” This is not just an education issue, but an economic development imperative! We must keep on track with challenging our students to be the best and in addition providing the proper assessments that align with standards to ensure they are on track to be college and career ready! -C.
